  1. Dentition is the type and number of teeth in
  2. a species. Different kinds of teeth have 
  3. different functions, for instance a 
  4. grass-eating animal will have large molars
  5. for grinding its food, whereas a meat-eater
  6. will need powerful canines for catching and 
  7. killing its prey. The teeth that are less
  8. useful may be reduced in size or missing 
  9. altogether. Young children have deciduous
  10. dentition, popularly known as "milk teeth",
  11. the first ones erupting at about six months
  12. of age. Mixed dentition is present from the
  13. ages of about six (when the first milk teeth
  14. are shed) to about 12. Permanent dentition
  15. (up to 32 teeth) is usually complete by the
  16. mid-teens, although the third molars (wisdom
  17. teeth) may not appear until around the age of
  18. 21 and these are nearly allways removed by a
  19. dentist.
